Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur Has A New Release Date, And It’s Brutal

Guy Ritchie's King Arthur movie has had a hell of a time making it to the big screen, but it seems the trials are not over yet. The movie has now been delayed by two months, and that's not the worst part. The worst part is that the new release date is May 12, 2017. The week after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 premieres, meaning that Arthur has the odds stacked against Arthur making any money.

Prior to now, there were no major wide releases coming out on the second Friday of May in 2017. This was a calculated move by all of the studios to stay away from the behemoth that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Guardians was being given a wide berth because the first movie was a huge hit, and considering how little known the property was at the time, that's saying something. Now, it's a sequel to a huge hit. If another big summer movie wants to make money they need to do so after Marvel has made theirs.

The previously held March 24, 2017 date is now being taken up by ChiPS according to The Hollywood Reporter. CHiPS was previously a summer movie with an August 11 release date. There's no explanation given for the changes so it's not clear if the decision to change things around was done to intentionally move King Arthur into the summer movie race or if there was an apparent need to take ChiPS out of it and Guy Ritchie drew the short straw. One could see this as a vote of confidence that King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is the movie to bring in the summer movie dollars for Warner Bros. Though, one would think that Wonder Woman, coming out less than a month later, is the film saddled with those expectations.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter. It just seems that Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is destined to get repeatedly screwed with. The movie has been delayed twice previously, it was originally supposed to be released this past summer, and that's following an epic production schedule. At this point, one wonders if the movie will ever actually see the light of day. At least we have the trailer.

Story

We're certainly curious to see what King Arthur: Legend of the Sword brings to the table when it finally gets to it. It's certainly going to be a unique take on the Arthur legend and Guy Ritchie may be just the, well, guy, to breathe new life into the classic tale.

Top Trending Movies Of 2016, According to Twitter

Watch Movies

Social media has become a fundamental aspect in determining the films that define a given year. For better or for worse, the movies that get talked about tend to seem indicative to a year's overall tone. Of course, 2016 is no different. With this madhouse of a year coming to a close, we've officially learned the top ten trending films on Twitter in 2016. They are:

#StarWars (Star Wars)

#SuicideSquad (Suicide Squad)

#Deadpool (Deadpool)

#HarryPotter (Harry Potter)

#Batmanvsuperman (Batman vs Superman)

#CaptainAmericaCivilWar (Captain America Civil War)

#FindingDory (Finding Dory)

#TheRevenant (The Revenant)

#Zootopia (Zootopia)

#Ghostbusters (Ghostbusters)

Generally speaking, we shouldn't' necessarily be too surprised when it comes to these films. Major franchise tent poles tend to garner quite a bit of traction on social media, so it's far from shocking that installments in the Star Wars, Marvel, and DC universes all trended well this year. It's also not surprising that Star Wars has taken the top spot, as the franchise from a galaxy far, far away came in to 2016 white hot following the December 2015 release of The Force Awakens, and definitely sustained that momentum leading up to this month's release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Star Wars hype has basically become a perpetual motion machine at this point, and we expect that to continue.

Following Star Wars, it's almost entirely a franchise game. We go down the line from Suicide Squad, to Deadpool, to Harry Potter (because of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them), to Dawn of Justice, to Civil War, to Finding Dory, until we finally get to The Revenant. Considering the fact that Alejandro Iñárritu's intense period piece allowed Leonardo DiCaprio to finally earn his first Oscar this year, its popularity also makes plenty of sense. Coming in behind The Revenant is Disney's socially relevant animated film, Zootopia, and Paul Feig's controversial Ghostbusters reboot brings up the rear at the number ten spot.

It's obviously worth noting that "trending" isn't necessarily synonymous with "popular." Sure, movies like Deadpool, Civil War, and Finding Dory all became smash hits with critics and audiences alike, but movies like Suicide Squad, Dawn of Justice, and Ghostbusters all received thorough lashings online. A surge in online chatter regarding a specific movie does not always mean that the things being said are positive; it just means that people are talking.

Even with all of the franchise films present on this list, it's become increasingly obvious that 2016 hasn't really become defined by any single style of film. Sure, superheroes and well-known series reigned supreme, but Twitter's top ten films of the year are still an eclectic bunch. CinemaBlend will bring you any and all relevant details related to 2016's biggest movies as more information becomes available, and we cannot wait to see what Hollywood has in store for 2017.
